Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) took the floor on October 30 to sharply criticize the Obama administration for its Syria policy. In his view the White House and the State Department are to blame for Russia’s increased military presence in the country.
McCain, who is the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, asserted that President Obama had “confused our friends, encouraged our enemies, mistaken an excess of caution for prudence, and replaced the risks of action with the perils of inaction.”
He went on to say that “after four years in Syria the US has stood by as Bashar al Assad’s war against the Syrian people goes on and on and on.”
Vladimir Putin’s strategy is logical according to McCain, who named what he believes are the Russian President’s three strategic priorities:
1. Play a mayor role in Syria
2. Preserve the port of Latakia (which is located about an hour’s drive from the Russian naval facility in Tartus)
3. Prop up Bashar Al-Assad
