Ethiopian Airlines from East Africa launched its first-ever flight operated by women-only on November 19, 2015.
This unique flight was operated fully by an all-female Ethiopian crew led by female flight deck crew members with senior female executives of the Airline on board. Other on ground preparations such as Cabin Operations, Airport Operations, Flight Dispatcher, Load Controller, Ramp Operations, On- board Logistics, Aviation Safety and Security, Ticket Offices, Catering as well as Air Traffic Control were conducted by females.
When the flight arrived from Addis Ababa in Bangkok, the customs and immigration officers were all female too.
This exceptional service in Ethiopian history was aimed at manifesting Ethiopian’s corporate belief of ‘Women Empowerment for sustainable growth’.
Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer Ato Tewolde GebreMariam said:
“It is a great honor for us to have competent Women Aviation Professionals at Ethiopian in every aspect of the aviation field, which portrays Ethiopian as a gender responsive organization that strives to pursue its underlying stance of being an equal opportunity employer.
We are very proud of their achievements and contributions and it is our sincere belief that this will continue with an enhanced magnitude and passion to sustain Ethiopian on its fast growth trajectory.”
She added that, “here in the continent of Africa, we are lagging behind in women empowerment. So this is going to inspire all the school girls in Africa that they have a very bright future in the 21st century.”
Congratulations ladies and Ethiopian Airlines – well done! A great idea!
