ISIS claims responsibility for another horrible slaughter
ISIS has yet again shown their ruthless disregard for human life, even other Muslims, as a bomb destroyed a building in a busy shopping district as many were breaking fast for Ramadan and watching the Euro 2016 football matches.
Facts
- 292 were killed by a huge ISIS bomb, including at least 20 women and 25 children
- The bomb exploded in the busy Karada district, a popular shopping area of the capital, Baghdad.
- The bomb was a suicide truck bombing, which plowed into the building at around midnight
- ISIS quickly claimed responsibility for the attack claiming they were targeting Shia Muslims.
- Residents are still searching for bodies and possible survivors in the rubble of the building.
The Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has declared 3 days of mourning, saying in a statement, “With deep sorrow, pain and sympathy, we mourn the martyrs of the tragedy of the heinous, dastardly and cowardly bombing at Karrada in Baghdad at dawn today. Dozens of sons of our dear people were killed in the attack. With this deep pain, we announce three-day public mourning across the country starting today.”
The response from the Iraqi government was met with anger, as people threw objects and shouted at the Prime Ministers caravan as it drove around, and a arch of angry residents walked from Karada (the site of the attack) to Abadi’s residence. They are outraged over the poor state of security in Baghdad, and they blame the government for this.
The United States released a statement about the attack, saying “we remain united with the Iraqi people and government in our combined efforts to destroy ISIL. These attacks only strengthen our resolve to support Iraqi security forces as they continue to take back territory from ISIL, just as we continue to intensify our efforts to root out ISIL’s terrorist network and leaders.”
Other attacks
Iraq has been the victim of hundreds of attacks over the last decade, with this being one of the most deadly.
This marks just the latest in a series of attacks by ISIS that is seeming to be incessant that ever-increasing. Just a day before, a horrible attack in Dhaka, Bangladesh left 28 dead, with 20 of the victims being hostages.
This comes just days after the attack on the Istanbul Airport that killed 40+ people, and weeks after the deadly ISIS inspired attack in Orlando, and the attacks seem to be getting much more frequent and bolder.
