The turmoil and crisis we are experiencing in the world today, according to Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, is a direct consequence of States’ disregard for human rights. He told the UN General Assembly Third Committee.

The situation could not improve unless the international community acted to guarantee a number of basic rights.

Among those are:

  • the right to dissent and criticism
  • the right to peaceful assembly
  • freedom from torture
  • the right to public services like education and healthcare
  • the right to development
  • the right to fair trial
  • freedom from discrimination
  • protection of civilians in the case of conflict.

Top diplomat Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein calls the refugee crisis “the worst human displacement since World War II.”

He is a great diplomat from Jordan, who has been promoting  human rights for decades. Since 2010 and previously from 2000 to 2007, Mr. Al Hussein has served as Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York. He was Jordan’s Ambassador to the United States and Mexico from 2007 to 2010 and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1996 to 2000. Knowledgeable in international criminal justice, he played a central role in the establishment of the International Criminal Court, notably as the first President of its governing body, chairing complex, often pioneering, negotiations on “elements” of individual offenses falling under the crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

According to Al Hussein, only the improvement of human rights all over the world can stop the global refugee flow, now mainly from MENA, Africa and Afghanistan.

What can the UN do to better protect human rights ?

Where are the concrete action plans of the U.S. or the EU for human dignity in the world, beside lukewarm nice words ?

Where are the plans of U.S. presidential candidates, like Trump or Mrs. Clinton?
