Actor Robert Redford is supporting a petition started by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). In a video published on youtube, he urges viewers to sign a statement that demands political action on climate change and will presented to world leaders at this December’s Paris Climate Change Summit.

The movie star is well known for his engagement in climate issues. In an address to climate ministers at the United Nations in June, Redford said:

I am here today as an environmental advocate, a father, grandfather, and also a concerned citizen – one of billions around the world who are urging you to take action now on climate change.”

“Unless we move quickly away from fossil fuels, we’re going to destroy the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the health of our children, grandchildren, and future generations.”

“The time for half measures and climate denial is over.”

“The mission is as simple as it is daunting: save the world before it’s too late.”

“Only by acting now and standing together behind a universal climate agreement can we live up to the UN’s founding promise.”

“Only by acting now and standing together can we tip the scales and change the course of history.”

“When 193 countries take center stage in Paris this December, the citizens of the world will be watching.”

With the Paris Climate Summit starting tomorrow, Redford urges people to take a stand for the environment.

Since the failure of the 2009 Kopenhagen Conference, world leaders have been stuggling to come up with common rulesets to govern global climate politics.

One of the main roadblocks remains the difference of positions held by the United States on the one hand, and developing nations on the other.

While many in the US have understood the dangers of climate change, there is still a concentrated effort underway trying to sway public attention away from the issue.
