According to Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari, the war against the Islamist terror group Boko Haram is “technically” won.
Military operations by the group have all but stopped completely.
While there remains a small force deep inside the Boko Haram’s heartland of Borno state, according to Mr Buhari the much weakened militants are not capable of launching any thing larger than occasional IED attacks.
It remains to be seen whether the President’s claims hold true over the coming months. Boko Haram, which has officially joined ISIS, and now calls itself the Islamic State’s “West African province”, has been declared dead several times before. In the end it always came back.
During the terror group’s war against the Nigerian military, more than 17,000 people have been killed. 1,5 million were driven from their homes.
Boko Haram gained notoriety, when it abducted 200 schoolgirls, which prompted a global campaign for the hostages’ release.
